How Do I Choose the Perfect Art Piece for My Home?
Art can completely transform your space - but how do you choose the right piece? Let’s explore how to find artwork that speaks to you, suits your style, and elevates your home.
The Art of Choosing the Right Artwork
Choosing the perfect art piece for your home can feel overwhelming - but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you're curating a gallery wall or searching for statement artwork for your living room, art should feel like an extension of you. It should reflect your style, your energy, and your story.
As an artist who works on commissions and original artwork for interiors, I’ve helped people find (or create) just the right piece for their living space, and from this, I’ve got a few suggestions that might just help you choose the right artwork for your space.
1. Start With the Space
Where is the artwork going? The room and wall you’re working with will influence the size, tone, and subject matter of the piece.
Living room art might call for something bold or expressive—a focal point.
Bedroom art is often softer, more soothing.
Hallways or kitchens are great for smaller prints, playful pieces, or collections.
Open plan living spaces are great for a mix of bold statement art, and collections, helping you to break the living space into separate living spaces with different style and character.
If you’re searching for inspiration online such as on Pinterest you might want to try searching “modern art for home decor” or “wall art for small spaces” to narrow your results and get a more refined view of the types of artwork to suit your space.
2. Consider Mood and Meaning
Art isn’t just decoration—it’s atmosphere. Think about how you want the room to feel:
Calm and grounded? Try neutral abstract prints or textural pieces.
Energising? Go for vibrant colours, bold brushwork, or contemporary line art.Personal and meaningful? Commission a custom art piece that tells your story or reflects your journey.
If something makes you feel, it’s likely the right piece for you.
3. Match Your Style - Or Challenge It
Your art can blend seamlessly with your home décor aesthetic—or it can stand out as a statement.
For modern minimalist spaces, try monochrome line drawings or geometric prints.
For boho or eclectic rooms, mixed-media pieces or nature-inspired art work beautifully. If your style is more traditional, consider contemporary artwork that adds contrast without clashing.
Sometimes, the most perfect piece is the one that surprises you.
4. Think About Scale
One of the most common mistakes in selecting artwork is getting the size wrong. A large wall with a tiny print can feel unbalanced—just as an oversized piece can overwhelm a narrow space.
As a rule of thumb: Art should take up about two-thirds the width of your furniture (like the sofa or sideboard it's hanging above).
If in doubt, ask your artist (hi 👋) for guidance. I’m always happy to recommend sizes or create custom work that fits your space exactly.
5. Be Open to Originals and Prints
Whether you’re investing in a one-of-a-kind original painting or curating a gallery wall with affordable art prints, it’s all about what resonates with you. Originals carry unique energy and texture. Prints, especially in smaller sizes, are ideal for layering or gifting.
Both can bring richness to your home—and I offer both to fit a variety of budgets and styles.
6. Let Your Heart Guide You
This might be the most important tip of all: Trust your gut. The right piece of art doesn’t just match your sofa—it speaks to you. It’s the one you keep coming back to. The one that makes you pause.
You don’t need to explain why you love it. That feeling is enough.
