Studio Update: Coastal Floral Commission in Progress
Studio Update
It’s been a busy first few months back in the studio, and I’ve been diving into a new commission that I’m really excited about! This piece is shaping up to be a blend of coastal scenery and abstract florals, bringing together different elements for a summery, light-filled effect.
I’ve only just started it — spending about two to three hours so far — but even in these early stages, it’s already feeling wonderfully summery and bright. There’s something special about starting a piece from scratch and watching it slowly take shape on the canvas.
Here’s a little sneak peek of the progress so far:
Behind the Story
This piece is a little homage to my grandfather, who was also a painter. He had a deep love for sea and landscape scenes, and I have such fond memories of watching him work as a child — mesmerized as he applied paint to the canvas and taught me the basics of composition and layering to create depth.
He was my first teacher and opened my eyes to the world of painting at a very young age. Those moments with him are ones I will always cherish, and this commission feels like a way to honor his influence while exploring my own artistic voice.
Artistic Process
I’m absolutely loving the colors in this piece — they remind me of warm, sunny days: light, colourful, and calm. When I start a canvas, I usually have a general idea in my head, but I enjoy letting the work guide me as it evolves.
For this piece, I’ve been building the layers using brushes, palettes, and even spray paint. I start by adding subtle pastels and then layer more paint on top, allowing each stage to inform the next. It’s really a process of creation and discovery — thinking through the composition as it takes shape, noticing areas I love, areas that need reworking, and letting the piece change organically over time.
This work will come together to depict a mix of elements: the sea, beach huts, sailing boats, sand dunes, and florals. Each element will interact with the others, creating a harmonious, summery scene that’s both playful and serene.
Looking Ahead & Commissions
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be developing the piece further, adding more layers, textures, and details to bring it fully to life. I can’t wait to share more updates as it evolves!
